Mercedes Lagrava de Martínez
María Mercedes Lagrava nació el 30 de mayo de 1914 en Lobería, Buenos Aires. Se casó con Atilio Feliciano Martínez con quien tuvo cuatro hijxs, tres mujeres y un varón. La familia poseía un kiosco y puesto de diarios muy cerca de la gobernación provincial. En el año 1973 falleció su esposo, recayendo en ella ser sostén del hogar.
Después de 1977 la vida de Mercedes no será la misma. El 21 de junio Atilito -como cariñosamente le decían sus hermanas- es secuestrado cuando se encontraba cumpliendo el servicio militar.
Mercedes con 68 años comienza el periplo de aprender a redactar habeas corpus y pedidos de audiencias a las autoridades de los regimientos militares. Escribir como una forma de poner en marcha la búsqueda, cartas para buscar respuestas y avisos para mantener la memoria de Atilio presente.
«No busqué otra cosa que ese encuentro con mi hijo, Atilio César y hasta que no se produzca, no conozca la verdad, continuaré su búsqueda».
Mercedes falleció en 1987, hoy sus restos descansan con su hijo quien fue identificado por el Equipo Argentino de Antropología Forense. Ambos se encuentran en el Mausoleo “Memoria, Verdad y Justicia” del Cementerio de La Plata.
María Mercedes Lagrava was born on May 30, 1914, in Lobería, Buenos Aires. She married Atilio Feliciano Martínez, with whom she had four children, three daughters and one son. The family owned a kiosk and newspaper stand very close to the provincial government building. In 1973, her husband died, leaving her to become the breadwinner.
Mercedes’s life would never be the same when, at 68 years of age, on June 21, 1977, “Atilito”—as his sisters affectionately called him—was kidnapped while performing his military service.
Mercedes began the journey of learning how to petition for habeas corpus and request audiences with the authorities of the military regiments. Writing as a way to launch the search, letters seeking answers, and notices to keep Atilio’s memory alive.
«I sought nothing other than that reunion with my son, Atilio César, and until that happens, and until I know the truth, I will continue my search.» Mercedes died in 1987. Today, her remains rest with her son, who was identified by the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team, in the «Memory, Truth, and Justice» Mausoleum at the La Plata Cemetery.
